Document Notarization and Authentication for China

Need to use foreign documents in China? Most documents require notarization and authentication before Chinese authorities will accept them. Here's the complete process.

Why Authentication is Required

Chinese authorities will not accept a foreign document on its face. It must first be certified through a recognised chain so that the origin of the signature and seal can be verified.

Which chain applies depends on where the document was issued. The Hague Apostille Convention entered into force for mainland China on 7 November 2023. For public documents from another contracting state, a single apostille now replaces the former consular legalisation chain. Where the issuing country is not a contracting state, or objected to China's accession, the full chain of notarisation, national authentication and Chinese consular legalisation still applies.
